We went on spring break, invented a cocktail, and named it a Palm Springs Whiskey Sour

We went on spring break, invented a cocktail, and named it a Palm Springs Whiskey Sour

A place exists in the California desert where the sun always shines. Where the pool never closes. Where palm trees climb to the sky. Where the mountains paint an idyllic backdrop. And, the citrus trees, man, the citrus trees. They’re flush with fresh oranges and grapefruit.

That place is Palm Springs. You should visit. Just go between December and April because the desert sizzles in the summer.

We’re lucky gentlemen. In many ways. For many reasons. For instance, we get to spend one week out of every year in this paradise. We lounge by the pool. We hike in the mountains. We invent cocktail recipes. With all of these grapefruit just a pluck away, we’d be fools not to use them.

Tequila works well with grapefruit. Although we like tequila, we love whiskey, so this—Palms Springs Whiskey Sour—ranks as our most-enjoyed cocktail.

Ingredients

  • One teaspoon of sugar
  • One tablespoon of soda water
  • Two ounces of whiskey
  • One half of a grapefruit, squeezed
  • Two dashes of bitters
  • Two Maraschino cherries

Directions

In a rocks glass, dissolve sugar in soda water. Mix in whiskey, grapefruit juice, and bitters. Fill glass with ice. Garnish with cherries.

This drink is best enjoyed on a patio watching the sun set over the San Jacinto Mountains.
