If you know us here at G@H, you can appreciate that we love kitchen gadgets. Our motto: why use one when we can use two. We also love chicken wings, though we’ve got no corresponding slogan. It’s just that chicken wings are really, really delicious.
Chicken wings, deep fried, wreak havoc on the waistline. Multiply that when dipped in ranch or blue cheese. While that’s fine in moderation, we don’t do moderation well, especially with chicken wings.
This recipe uses (i) an Instant Pot and (ii) an air fryer. Different gadgets. If you’re looking to use an Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid, check out the comments below. If you want to only use an air fryer, that’s simple enough: here’s our recipe.
Here’s the other thing. We’re experimenting with a new diet. It’s one that we invented ourselves out of thin air. We’re sticking to poultry, seafood, non-starchy vegetables, fruits and nuts, while staying away from grains, dairy, starchy vegetables, fried food and (generally but not always) red meat. It’s not much more complicated than that. There are no defined cheat days. But, if we are invited out or attend some event or celebration, the rules evaporate. In about six weeks, we’ve lost 12 to 14 pounds. Slow and steady.
Poultry means chicken, and given the green light, we’ve gone chicken-wing wild, developing a one-two kitchen-gadget punch. We use an Instant Pot to get the meat oh, so, tender and then air fryer to crisp up the skin. Crispy chicken skin is what we dream about at night.
Our recipe lies below.
CHICKEN WINGS: INSTANT POT X AIR FRYER
Ingredients
- A package of 8-10 chicken wings (whole, not split)
- One cup of chicken stock
- One teaspoon of salt
- One teaspoon of pepper
- One tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning
Directions
Pour chicken stock into pressure cooker. Insert steam rack. Toss wings in salt and pepper. Place chicken on steam rack. Cook on “High Pressure” for 5 minutes. Release steam. Remove wings.
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Toss wings in seasoning. Here we used Old Bay. We also like Cowtown Sweet Spot Barbeque Rub. Place wings in air fryer so that each rests squarely against the bottom to the basket. That is, do not stack the wings on top of one another. Depending on the size of the air fryer, you might need to run two shifts.
Cook wings in air fryer until skin looks crispy, about eight minutes, flipping at the halfway mark. Remove. Let cook. Eat.

I purchased an instant pot a year ago. I just purchased the instant pot air fryer . I am uncertain to the instructions of using pressure cooking then placing air fryer on . Can I use instant pot for cooking then place air fryer on? I have not found any recipes to help direct me
I just did this exact thing with my duo. The recipe called for pressure cooking then draining the liquid and switching to air fry.
I will forewarn you- the liquid from pressure cooking has a lot of fats and protein from the chicken in it and upon air frying the residue will cook to the bottom/sides of the pot and basket and good luck getting it off. I can’t get mine to go away.
I’m making wings in the duo crisp tonight but I’m skipping the pressure cook and just simply air frying the whole time.
Barkeeper’s friend powder.
Could you rinse out the pot, dry it, and line with tin foil?
Prior to using ours I spray it down with coconut cooking spray. Makes clean up much easier!
how did it turn out when you just air fried? I just got my duo crisp and would love to do chicken wings
Have you found a recipe for just air frying in the duo?
I just finished air frying chicken wings with the Instant Pot air Fryer top. I coated the wings with flour/spices in a bag and placed on end in the pot. Cooked them at 400 for 28 minutes (turned 1/2 way through) and they were perfect. Add what ever spices you want to flour or almond flour for low carb
I’m new to the instant pot duo crisp, I was worried about that. How’d you end up making your wings? Without pressure cooking? And how long in the air fryer lid?
How did it turn out without pressure cooking first
Yes you can use the instant pot first then air fryer after. Example: you use the pressure cooker first, when it’s done remove the meat and set a side and remove the liquid from the pot then you can use the pot again for air fryng but make sure to use the air fryer basket as well then you can now set it to air fryer.
I believe that is not possible.
I think you would have to depressurize your pot.
Then empty the liquid, at which time you could then switch to air fry method,
Luckily I have a separate air fryer and can move them straight to it after the instapot.
The recipe calls for transferring the wings to the air fryer basket
“Place wings in air fryer so that each rests squarely against the bottom to the basket”
So that would mean to use whatever type of air fryer you’d choose. For an air fryer to work, it must be able to circulate the heat differently than you would for a pressure or slow cooker. Think the difference between using your stove or oven to cook with.
I am going to try this recipe this afternoon. I plan to use the IP to cook as directed, then remove the wings and toss in seasoning. THEN I am going to clean out the IP pot, insert the Air Fryer basket and put some wings down low, add the upper tray and then put another layer there. Flip top to bottom half way thru and hope for the best. I will report back in!
Yes this worked. It just took me a couple of minutes to pour out the liquid, wash the inside, carefully dry the outside, put the pot back in, add the fryer basket and add the chicken pieces. I was unable to purchase whole wings, so I am using wing pieces. I chose both the drummette and the middle section. I used just enough pieces to fit on the trivit in a single layer, this means they fit in the frying basket as a single layer too. I found the end result tasty and somewhat crispy. They did stick to the fryer base and they could have been a bit crisper. I did 8 minutes on the Air Fryer setting, turning once. Maybe turn a second time and give them another 2 mintues.
Injust got the air fryer lid for my instant pot and will try just cooking the wings totally with the air fryer. Spray the inner pot with cooking spray for easy clean up
You can use crock pot liners in your pressure cooker to pressure cook the chicken. You can choose to dump the liquids out of the pot or leave in the liner after removing the pressure cooker lid. Put your chicken on steam rack then unplug your instant pot and place the air fryer lid on to finish the chicken. The crock pot liner will hold up to it all like a champ. Got mine on Amazon PanSaver EZ Clean Multi Use Cooking Bags and Slow Cooker Liners, 50 Count
by PanSaver. No clean up and perfect wings.
I just followed this recipe..after the chicken was cooked in the IP, (which I seasoned BEFORE I put them into the IP) I poured the chicken stock into a Tupperware container to freeze to use for something, at another time. THEN, I cleaned the IP pot insert, dried it and carried on with the recipe….I also sprayed the air fryer insert with avocado oil spray, when I inserted it into the IP pot. Everything cleaned up beautifully. After all the chicken was air fried, poured some wing sauce into a big bowl and tossed the wings in the sauce and served right away.
