We attended the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover in Salida, Colorado. Lovely town. Solid concert.
Yes, the latest album from Mumford & Sons, Wilder Mind, disappointed. The band deviated from their trademark sound, which we love, and embraced a decidedly different, more electric sound, which we don’t love.
You’d be a real dummy, though, if you dismissed Marcus Mumford. First of all, he is still making great, new music. You know “Kansas City,” which was released in November 2014 by the New Basement Tapes. On that same album, he also croons “When I Get My Hands on You,” and it might be better.
Secondly, Marcus Mumford is a genuine rockstar. He goes hard. Really hard. Perhaps too hard. He bellows at the top of his lungs. He surfs the crowd. And, the band plays and plays—damn near every song.
Mumford & Sons put on such a superbly executed yet authentic and enjoyable show that we didn’t mind when they played their new stuff. We even sang along. Here are some highlights:
Beyond its own performance, the band organized the whole two-day music festival, which also featured 11 other bands. Here are a couple of choice tracks from them.
1. Jenny Lewis
2. tUnE-yArDs
3. Dawes
4. The Flaming Lips
5. The Vaccines
6. James Vincent McMorrow
7. Blake Mills
Two years ago, we passed on seeing Mumford & Sons in Guthrie, Oklahoma. It proved to be a huge mistake that we were unwilling to repeat this summer. Do yourself a favor: if Mumford is playing, go and enjoy. It’s a bona fide experience.
