We’re not much for fighting crowds at brick-and-mortar retailers on Black Friday. You won’t find us camping out in cold, dark parking lots hoping to score whatever “doorbuster” is advertised in a local newspaper insert. But, there’s no denying that deals abound on the day after Thanksgiving (and now Thanksgiving too).
As unabashed consumerists, we have a ritual wherein we covet certain items, read everything written about them, monitor their prices, hope our interest fades, then if that interest endures, eventually splurge. Often times, this ritual hits its crescendo on Black Friday because prices tumble as low as they’re going to be for the foreseeable future.
We at G@H have put together a list of the very best Black Friday deals of 2018. Four of the five items are ones that we actually purchased on this or a prior Black Friday. The fifth is one for which we wish we’d waited until Black Friday because we would’ve saved big.
1. Instant Pot
No one loves kitchen gadgets more than us. We own a bookcase full of them. And, our favorite one—by leaps and bounds—is the Instant Pot. It works swiftly and simply. Flavor that would take a day to build in the oven or on the stove can be developed in a handful of minutes in an electronic pressure cooker like the Instant Pot. How? Science, probably. Google it. We love ours so much that we’ve purchased Instant Pots for all of our family as Christmas gifts over recent years.

2. Chromecast Audio
We are gigantic fans of Chromecast Audio. It supports whole home audio—wireless, synchronized whole home audio. It integrates with Google Home devices and plays well with Spotify. It is much, much cheaper than Sonos. And, its setup and maintenance are simple.

3. Sweaters
Sweaters make Midwestern winters bearable. We prefer ours to be bulky with buttons and maybe a shawl collar. However you like yours, Black Friday is the time to buy. Check out Target, Old Navy and Banana Republic for good deals.

4. Google Pixel 3 XL
We’d been iPhone devotees for a decade. But, we were tired of them self-destructing after two years. And, we wanted better integration with Google products in our smart home. When Google announced the Pixel 3 XL in October, we jumped on it, ordering one the day they were released. Admittedly, we miss some iPhone features, particularly iMessage, FaceTime and FindFriends, and the iPhone played better with our employer’s IT security. The Google Pixel 3 XL, though, has the most amazing camera. It captures better low-light photos than our Canon 5d Mark III. Our only regret is not waiting until Black Friday: we’d have saved $200.

5. Pioneer Elite VSX-LX302 Receiver Black
Last year, we renovated our basement—replacing all the flooring, fixtures and furniture and putting in a projector with a 100” retractable screen. We landed a great Black Friday deal on this Pioneer Elite VSX-LX302 Receiver Black which supports Dolby Atmos, so then we had to buy Pioneer Elite Atmos-enabled speakers. We may have gotten carried away, but it’s glorious, room-shaking, high-fidelity gloriousness. We suggest you do the same.
