The Kansas City Royals: A team of extraordinary gentlemen from a town of extraordinary people

The Kansas City Royals: A team of extraordinary gentlemen from a town of extraordinary people

IMG_8051-3

We at G@H have caught Kansas City Royals fever. And, we’re not alone. Everyone loves the Royals.

A recent ESPN SportsNation poll showed that 69% of people are rooting for Kansas City against San Francisco in the World Series. Only two states registered more fans backing the Giants: California (where San Fran is) and Nevada (where no one is). According to the Washington Post, the Royals are “America’s team.” And, that’s nice, but it understates things. Royals’ fever is global. Just ask SungWoo Lee.

What makes the Kansas City Royals so endearing? We at G@H have some thoughts.

1. The Royals’ right fielder, Nori Aoki, cannot run in a straight line. Seriously. He can’t. But, Nori still gets to the ball—most of time.

2. In support of its team, Kansas City turns everything—foundations, bridges, buildings—blue.

What a beautiful shot of Union Station all in blue. Go Royals! pic.twitter.com/gIpm5khKsj

If I had known the Royals were going to rock the postseason, I would’ve invested in blue toilet bowl cleaner. pic.twitter.com/zBlxLj4WLq

3. In the ALDS, the Royals’ doughy, slow-moving DH Billy Bulter stole his first base since 2012. Then, he danced a little dance.

4. Don’t dare disrespect the Royals’ on-air personalities or they’ll shame you on live television.

5. Terrance Gore is a seemingly sixteen-year-old rookie who began the season playing for the Class-A Wilmington Blue Rocks. He only pinch runs, but when he does, he can score from second base on an infield hit.

6. Kansas City Royals fans are also Kansas City Chiefs fans. They behave the same regardless of the sport, which means they stand, scream and bang on things for the entire game. In case you didn’t know, Arrowhead is the world’s loudest outdoor stadium.

It’s official! 142.2 is a new @GWR record.

7. Remember Bruce Chen? Yes, he got cut from the team in August. But, he was a helluva nice guy. And, he could tell a joke. We sure miss Bruce.

8. The Royals last made the playoffs in 1985. Their fans are so excited to be winning that they will buy anything that has “Royals” and “postseason” printed on it. According to USA Today, the Royals are leading all MLB teams in merchandise sales.

9. After winning the ALDS, Royals players picked up the tab for an entire bar. Those players, who had sprayed champagne all over each other in their locker room, sprayed champagne all over the fans in the bar.

10. Defense! Pitching! Defense and Pitching! Alcides Escobar has a telescoping arm. James Shields can strike you out with his stare. Alex Gordon is a Greek god. Yordano Ventura throws fire. Lorenzo Cain has a beautiful pair of birdlike wings, and he soars around the outfield shagging fly balls. Wade Davis has an ERA of 1.00. It’s 1.00.

11. As a bonus, enjoy this rather long, but thoroughly enjoyable, highlight video.

From all of us at G@H, good luck Royals!
