Spinach is for drinking: G@H’s month-long green smoothie challenge

Spinach is for drinking: G@H’s month-long green smoothie challenge

It’s early in 2014. Healthy living still preoccupies people, including us at G@H.  But, really, our interest stretches beyond the New Year.

Although we aren’t old, we’re getting older.  We think more about our food. We try to eat better—mostly because we don’t want to buy new pants but also because we see food differently. We appreciate food as fuel. The right food boosts our energy, improves our focus and keeps us, well, alive.

Don’t mistake us. We eat pizza and ribs. We’d rather lose a lung than give up Buffalo wings. Cheese is, most definitely, our friend. To facilitate eating bad occasionally, though, we eat well ordinarily.

G@H: Green smoothie after bending in @Blendtec

One G@H editor particularly sucks at breakfast. He often skips it. When he has something, it’s usually instant oatmeal. That changes today.

Today is February 1, and each day during February, he will start his morning with a green smoothie. We’ve armed him only with a Blendtec Designer Series Blender and his own ingenuity. Will he prosper or flounder? Who knows? But, we expect to be entertained.

G@H: Preparing to make a green smoothie in this @Blendtec blender

Maybe, it’s beginner’s luck. Maybe, he’s a green smoothie savant. Whenever the case, his first concoction turned out mighty tasty. Here’s his recipe:

Green Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of spinach, loosely packed
  • ¼ cup of Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of water
  • an orange, peeled and segmented
  • a banana, peeled and divided into pieced
  • 1 tablespoon of unflavored protein powder
  • 1 cup of frozen mango chunks.

Directions

Add ingredients in the order listed above. Blend for 30 seconds. Scrape down sides with a spatula. Blend for another 30 seconds. Scrape down sides again. Repeat until the spinach in completely incorporated into liquid, i.e., there are no more visible pieces of spinach.

Check back weekly for updates on his saga—and, of course, for lessons, tips and recipes.
